Blood and tissue banks

Blood banks

The American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) has been developing standards for blood banks and transfusion services since 1957. It advises that the temperature of blood products should be registered at least every four hours and stay within their storage and transport limits. The limits are divided into three groups. The first, for example, specifies a storage temperature of 1 °C to 6 °C and a transport temperature of 1 °C to 10 °C for whole blood, red blood cells and blood plasma.

The temperature range for storage and transport of the second group, which includes platelets, is 20 °C to 24 °C. The third group contains cryo-precipitated plasma and prescribes storage temperatures ≤ -18 °C and that the plasma must remain in a frozen state during transport. For fresh frozen plasma (FFP), temperatures of ≤ -18 °C or ≤ -65 °C apply both for storage and transport.

Tissue banks

Every establishment is free to determine if it is reasonably likely for temperature and humidity to have adverse effects on the human cells, tissues and cellular and tissue-based products (HCT/Ps) it stores and/or manufactures. Environmental conditions can facilitate contamination or cross-contamination of HCT/Ps or equipment as much as accidental exposure of HCT/Ps to communicable disease agents can.

Where appropriate, therefore, the environment should also be monitored for microorganisms. Indoors it is important to monitor temperature, relative humidity and differential pressure in order to avoid cross-contamination. Particles are monitored to measure the quantity of microorganisms.

We offer a real-time monitoring system (365/7/24) with real-time alarm for both applications, regardless of whether you need to monitor the temperature of a single refrigerator or thousands of refrigerators or want a complex solution to monitor various parameters.
